Up and Coming: Eddie Meeks

By Chris Rolls @ MP3.com
December 21, 2006 at 11:00:00 AM

Eddie Meeks provides a bitter dose of quality rhymes, proving that in Top 40 rap, all that glitters is not necessarily gold.

The reality is that 2006 has revealed what could be the final days of rap in Top 40 music. T.I. was the only artist to collect a platinum plaque; Jay-Z slapped together a lackluster release to save Def Jam; and the mighty Nas' stunningly poor album proved that hip-hop is in fact dying. So as the empire of commercial rap feels its foundation shake, many rap cats are fleeing back to where it all began: underground. Not underground as in digital backpackers, but as in pavement-pounding cipher fanatics that cherish verbal acrobatics over mass appeal.

A case in point is Eddie Meeks.

Meeks has been ducking through the trenches for more than a decade. As one-third of the Atlanta-based Prophetix, Meeks has perfected a signature Southern style made up of a rugged yet comforting voice that creeps and crawls around intelligently designed lyrical mazes. Or as Meeks says, "My spectacular vernacular travel thorough space and time like Scott Bakula." That line is from "The Bitterdose," which is Meeks' alias, and apparently describes his ability to brag and boast. And judging from the tracks Meeks has posted to MP3, heads should be lining up for a heaping spoonful of "The Bitterdose."
